  • Puerto Cabopino

Puerto de Cabopino is a small romantic harbour and beach, just off southern Spain’s main coast road between Marbella and Mijas Costa. It’s one of those places you never seem to hear about in the main tourist guides, and maybe that’s just as well, because as a result of not being that well known, it’s managed to avoid becoming overcrowded with beach-goers.

That’s probably because the marina is completely sheltered from view by a tasteful development of luxury apartments and townhouses, which overlook Puerto Cabopino. There are also surprisingly few restaurants and bars in the Puerto Cabopino area itself, most of which have been there for years, so have a real ‘local’ feel about them.

  • beach

Cabopino is well sheltered and protected from the elements. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer and as the beach has a gentle slope into the sea this makes Cabopino particularly child friendly and safe. Chiringitos (beach bars and restaurants) are plentiful and renowned for excellent food, especially seafood at affordable prices.

  • port

Puerto Cabopino is a charming little marina. This small marina is surrounded by numerous great restaurants including seafood, English, Italian, Indian and Chinese.

A popular spot with the locals all year round, but not well known enough among tourists to be over crowded.

A great place to wine and dine while watching the world go around. See the beautiful cruisers, the flash cars and feed the fish!

  • restaurants

Puerto Cabopino offers a fine selection of restaurants with cuisine from all around the globe. Within walking distance of the apartment chose from international cuisine ranging from traditional Spanish or Italian, Chinese, English or enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the beach side chirungitos.

The many restaurants are based in the square or around the beautiful harbour amidst the glamour and sophistication of fine boats, what a back drop against which to enjoy fine dining. The restaurants are a gentle stroll across the square from the apartment. This leads you to the harbour, beach, pool and bars.

  • watersports

Splash Watersports, located in the heart of Puerto Cabopino since 1989, is the perfect address for water skiing, rapid-rib-rides, funtube, fishing trips, scuba diving or boat trips to see dolphins, whales, turtles etc. (sightings not guaranteed).

As you enter the marina bear left as you reach the yachts, and Splash Watersports is approximately 75 yards on your left, up the alley before Julies Bar and Bistro.

  • cabopino golf

With the driving range at 2 minutes walking of the apartment and the golf course "just around the corner", Cabopino Golf is at a perfect location...!

Cabopino Golf is a narrow and relatively short golf course; it is not a place for the wild hitter who would certainly lose a cartful of golf balls. The picturesque course will not only test the golfing skills it will also test the patience to the limit. The clubhouse sits atop a hill overlooking the sea and beside it there is a restaurant where an excellent lunch can be enjoyed at a reasonable price.

Inaugurated in April 2001. 18 holes with a par of 71 laid out by little-known Spanish architect Juan Ligues is short but very tight in places. Very scenic course with views to mountains and seas.

  • Shopping

Marbella is a shopper´s paradise with its many hypermarkets, supermarkets, designer boutiques and back street tourist shops. As long as you remember that the smaller stores will close for siesta, you can pretty much shop away, all day until 10pm.

For serious shoppers, head for Avenida Ricardo Soriano in Marbella and the centre and frontline of Puerto Banus where you will find the most designer clothes and jewellery stores you can imagine as well as some smaller boutique stores.

If you fancy being under one roof, try El Corte Ingles or La Canada where will find everything you could ask for. You can also find all you need for your home and garden and some of the best Interior Designers in the country here in Marbella.

  • ojen

Ojén (population approximately 2,000) is a town and municipality that sits in the mountains behind Marbella in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. Nearby cities include Mijas to the east, Marbella to the south, Istán to the west, and Monda and Coín to the north.

Its name is oddly derived from an Arabic word, hoxán, meaning "rough" or "bitter" place, thus it is curious that the Moors should establish a settlement in a place they presumably did not care for. In common with other inland villages such as Istán, Ojén was spared the Christians' embargo on the Moors living too close to the sea after the Reconquest.

  • ronda

Ronda is one of the oldest cities of Spain. Its origin, according to archaelogical findings in the old city space belongs to the Neolithic age. Despite of this, the presence of the human being in this land can be explained at a previous time. A proof of this are the sites found at caves, being the most important the one found at the Pileta's Cave, which is one of the best cave's paintings examples of all the Paleolithic age in Andalusia.

  • malaga

The city of Malaga is located in a privileged enclave. The municipality extends over an area of 398.25 square kilometres and its "de facto" urban population reaches the million inhabitants mark.

The main environmental and geographical factors that have intervened in the city's evolution and development have been maritime influences, its location in two river valleys (the Guadalhorce and the Guadalmina), its relief and its climate.

Whilst the Mediterranean Sea bathes the Malaga coastline, the Malaga Mountains close ranks behind to form a barrier of peaks that protects the city from the cold, whilst the regulating effect of the sea ensures the area its characteristic mild temperatures. The hottest months are July and August and the coldest are usually December and February, when the average temperatures vary between a maximum of 22.8ºC and a minimum of 13ºC. Rainfall in Malaga follows the seasons, with the most abundant rains occurring in autumn and winter.

At the mouth of the River Guadalhorce, river sediments have formed the area known as the "Guadalhorce Mudflats". Declared a Protected Natural Space in 1989, they currently occupy an area of 60 hectares. The other river that has played a decisive role in the history of Malaga is the Guadalmedina, which in Arabic means "the river of the city". It is 47 kilometres long and is fed mostly by the waters that run down from the Malaga Mountains.

The Malaga Mountains were declared a National Park in 1989. This gave greater protection to an area of 4,762 hectares, of which 97% is located within the municipality of Malaga. Its relief is steep and rugged, with summits that reach an average altitude of 500 metres. Its tree cover originates from the hydrological-forestry reforestations carried from the end of the 30s and the area contains over 230 different varieties of vegetation and more than 160 species of vertebrates.

  • Nerja

Nerja is one of the gems of the south coast of Spain, about 40 minutes drive from Malaga. In fact a drive to Nerja to see the sights is easily done in one day, and for those without a car, Nerja is an easy destination by train and then bus.

From Malaga the road to Nerja is a pleasurable drive, the Mediterranean on one side and the Sierra de Almijara mountains on the other, and it is for this reason Nerja is known as the pearl of the Costa Axarquia, though the Costa Tropical with all year round perfect weather is so close to Nerja that it’s easy to understand why Nerja is so popular.

The caves at Nerja are an obvious drawcard, with the world’s largest stalactite, but also cave paintings that are now known to be have been drawn by some of the last surviving Neanderthal folk.

But the town shouldn’t be missed just because the Nerja caves are nearby. Nerja’s town centre is an attractive place to wander around in the old quarter looking at the shops, courtyards of people’s homes, or enjoying the smells of restaurants and bakeries.

The ‘Balcon de Europa’ is here too, the place where in the 19th century royalty from all over Europe would visit, and where now the promenade is filled with cafés, buskers, and stalls. There is a statue of King Alfonso XII in bronze, the town church, and a covered walkway overlooking the cove beach below.

The Balcon de Europa is also where you’ll find the tourism office, though the ton hall is just next to the church, and the entire plaza is only 100 metres long so you shouldn’t have any trouble.

Outside Nerja on the way to the caves, be sure to stop and admire the El Aguila aqueduct built by Francisco Cantarero Senio to supply water to his sugar factory “Las Mercedes” at the end of the 19th century.

The aqueduct was built in mudejar style, is four stories high with a total of 37 half point arches, and made from brick kilned locally. The aqueduct is still used to this day, though only for irrigation, and has recently been restored to last another 100 years.

  • Sohail Castle

Sohail Castle (Spanish: Castillo Sohail) is a castle in Fuengirola, Spain. It was built in AD 956 by
Abd-ar-Rahman III to strengthen the coastal defenses.

The Sohail Castle rises upon a hill located next to the sea at 38 meters height and in the midst of the Fuengirola River’s mouth in the municipality of Fuengirola.

The geographical conditions of the hill in which the Sohial Castle is located, made its continuos settlement by Phoenicians, Punic, Romans, Muslims and Christians, possible; however the construction we can see nowadays is an Arab citadel from the early times of the invasion to the Iberian peninsula and the fortress was built upon a previous Roman construction. Most of what we can be seen today belongs to the time of Califa Abderraman III.

In 1485 Christians conquered the place thus beginning an important rearrangement of its architecture. Due to the castle’s proximity to the sea, the Fuengirola locality and its castle faced countless attacks from the legendary pirate Redbeard therefore King Charles the first sent to build a moat. It also suffered smuggling when the English occupied the Rock of Gibraltar, thus the Count of Montemar carried out a series of reforms.

In 1810, The troops of Napoleon occupied the castle up to 1812 when the Spanish troops regained the place.

    Description:
The facility counts with a polygonal story with high and narrow towers in its corners. The building owned several outlets but the most significant one is that of the door with a tower appearance that gives access to the inner side but in order to get to this door you need to go through a small ramp.

    Status of Conservancy:
It is in a consolidated ruin state. First archeological works were made in 1974, declaring the place a Historical and Artistic Monument in 1978. In 1995, the inner facility and its outlets were restored for the castle to serve as an auditorium. Since then it celebrates the Fuengirola City Festival every year.

Since year 2000, The Castle’s Nights are held in this auditorium. In 2002 a huge project was materialized with respect to the remodeling of its surroundings and the construction of more than 60 000 square meters of green areas, parking spaces and archeological zones.

    Ownership and use:
The municipality now owns it and it has been refurbished as a musical auditorium

    Heritage:
Under the protection of the Generic Declaration of Decree dated April 22, 1949 and Law 16/1985 on the Spanish Historical Heritage. In 1993, the Junta de Andalucía, decreed a special acknowledgement to the castles of the Autonomous Community of Andalucía.

    Visits:
The Sohail Castle is open for tourist visits from Monday to Sunday between 10 and 21 hours with a continued schedule
